True Metallic Metal (TMM) is a technique developed by Vallejo with the goal of representing metallic surfaces in a realistic way, using true metallic paints instead of simulating metal with flat colors, as in the Non-Metallic Metal (NMM) technique. This approach allows for natural reflections, shine, and depth, preserving the visual and material richness of metal on miniatures. However, mastering TMM requires more than just using metallic paints: it demands the application of classical principles of light and shadow, working with gradients, transitions, and contrasts, just as in any other volume painting technique.
The True Metallic Metal range by Vallejo was created to offer control, consistency, and spectacular results through simple and effective methods for painting metallic surfaces. The line covers the entire chromatic spectrum, organized into 20 families of metallic colors, each consisting of four sub-ranges that work in perfect harmony:
Base: the main metallic tone, serving as the foundation for the entire color and light structure;
Light: the metallic highlight, used to emphasize illuminated areas and enhance brightness;
Shade: a satin non-metallic wash that deepens shadows and creates contrast;
Airbrush: the metallic base specially formulated for airbrush use, ensuring smooth and even coverage.
